Snapshots from BTA career day.

Last week, Benjamin Turner Academy hosted its annual Career Fair for students in grades four through eight. This year’s event featured an exciting variety of professionals and community organizations who shared their experiences and inspired students to begin thinking about their future careers.

Two groups of AP Biology students at Denzel Washington School of the Arts presented their research on energy conservation at the EmPowered Schools Summit, hosted at DWSA on Thursday. The summit, hosted in partnership with the New York Power Authority (NYPA) and the Alliance to Save Energy, empowered students from around the state to come up with innovative solutions for cleaner energy and environmental justice.

Since the 2016-17 school year, the Mount Vernon City School District has increased the levy by only 4.69%. The proposed 1.99% tax levy increase would bring that to 6.68%. For comparison, the White Plains City School District has increased by 16.84%, the City School District of New Rochelle has risen 20.57%, and the Pelham Union Free Central School District has raised the levy by 24.64% during the same time period. These districts are also requesting tax increases this year to balance their budgets, with White Plains proposing 1.60%, New Rochelle 1.85% and Pelham 3.72%.

The annual budget vote will be held on Tuesday, May 19, 2026. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., and you can find more information on our budget page or by reviewing the budget book.

Rebecca Turner Academy is proud to recognize 4th grade student Eve Green, who served as Assistant Principal for the Day on Friday, May 15. Throughout the day, Eve worked alongside Acting Principal Tamisha Grey and took on several leadership responsibilities, including leading the morning announcements, assisting with the Honor Roll Assembly, and visiting classrooms throughout the building.

Mount Vernon City School District nurses and secretaries were recognized for their stellar service to their schools at the April Superintendent’s Awards Celebration yesterday. The work of nurses and secretaries is vital to the smooth operation of any school, and they were selected for these awards as a show of appreciation for all that they do.
